A man is in hospital with serious injuries after a car crashed into a lamppost during a police chase last night (Saturday, February 24).

Cleveland Police have confirmed the 24-year-old driver of a silver Renault Clio is in hospital with serious injuries after the collision in Normanby Road, Ormesby, Middlesbrough

A 16-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the car, suffered neck and back pain and has since been released from hospital.The Northern Echo:

The crash, which happened during a "short police pursuit" has been referred to the police watchdog. 

Normanby Road was closed for several hours, between Ainstable Road and Allendale Road, while police carried out investigations. 

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "A man is in hospital with serious injuries following a single vehicle collision last night.The Northern Echo:

"At 11.40pm on Saturday 24 February, the silver Renault Clio collided with a lamp post during a short police pursuit.

"The 24-year-old driver was taken to James Cook University with serious injuries.

"A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the car suffered neck and back pain and has since been released from hospital."The Northern Echo:

"A mandatory referral to the IOPC has been made by the force."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision last night (24 February) shortly before midnight in Ormesby, Middlesbrough.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, one specialist crew and the Medicar. One patient was taken to James Cook hospital."

"The Medicar is a joint initiative with NEAS and Cleveland Police covering their force area.  It is staffed by two Special Constables and a NEAS paramedic."
