Police have secured a closure order on a problem flat that saw neighbours experience violence and threats in what has been described as a 'terrifying' time for residents.
Officers from Redcar’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) along with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council secured the closure order for the flat in Redcar.
Magistrates ordered the rented flat to be closed for three months after hearing reports from neighbours of violence and threatening behaviour.
The Teesside Court was also informed of ten reports by four residents of anti-social behaviour in and around the property on Harwal Road, Coatham, Redcar, which was occupied by a woman in her 60s.
Cllr Ursula Earl, Cabinet Member for Health, Welfare and Housing, said: “The decent people of this neighbourhood deserve to live in peace.
"No one should have to put up with this behaviour which was terrifying at times.
"We will continue to work with police, partner agencies and, of course, directly with residents themselves to do what it takes to protect people and that very much includes going to court when necessary.”
Magistrates were told most of the incidents occurred between December 2023 and January 2024.
The order means the tenant must not enter the property and it will be inaccessible to anyone for three months.

Sergeant Martyn Weston from Redcar’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: “Anti-social behaviour has a huge impact on residents in the community and it will not be tolerated.
"We will continue to work closely with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to close problem properties and improve the quality of lives of residents in Redcar.
“Information from the public remains vital and I’d encourage people to keep reporting incidents to us online via the Cleveland Police website, or by phoning 101."
