Police have issued a warning after fake window cleaners have been seen taking money from County Durham residents in exchange for work that's never carried out.

Officers from Durham Police say they have been made aware of reports of numerous males attending houses in the North Lodge area of Chester le Street, where they have pretended to be window cleaners.

After taking payments for services, which include window cleaning and gutter cleaning, the men have reportedly left the house and not returned.

According to Durham Police, this has happened several times already.

Following these reports, the police force has issued a warning to people in Chester le Street and the wider County Durham community about these 'workmen', who aren't legitimate.

In a statement, Durham Police said: "We have been made aware through numerous reports of males attending addresses in Chester le Street, most recently around the North Lodge area.

"These males are claiming to be window cleaners and asking to collect payments. These males have also been offering services such as cleaning guttering for cash payments. They are not legitimate workmen and don’t carry out the work but are taking payments."

The advice given by police was to ignore the doorstep callers and sellers and decline any services.

Police officers have also advised people to tell relatives in the area, especially if they're vulnerable or elderly.
