Where is your favourite place to go for brunch in the North East?
If you fancy something a little different from a full English breakfast or a stack of fluffy pancakes, you might want to try some fresh seafood.
We know just the place, as a fish bar in Tyne and Wear has been recommended by a top chef as one of the best places for brunch in the UK.
Riley’s Fish Shack in Tynemouth has been credited by Anna Hedworth, chef-patron of Cook House in Newcastle upon Tyne in an article published by The Times.
She has praised the establishment for its huevos rancheros with kippers among many other delicious items at the popular beach spot.
The Times said: “No long and lazy weekend is complete without brunch. Everything about it is laid-back, from the loose timings (anything from early morning to mid-afternoon) to the eclectic menu. Sweet American-style pancakes? Yes please! Classic full English? Why not?!
“This selection of favourite brunch destinations from some of the UK’s leading chefs includes an Indian-influenced menu in Bath and an Australian-style one in Belfast.
“The settings may vary, from a beachfront café in Margate to a converted shipping container on a Bristol wharf, but what they all have in common is great food, relaxed dining and the perfect space in which to fortify yourself against the week ahead.”

Why is Riley’s Fish Shack one of the UK’s best places for brunch?
Anna recommends Riley’s Fish Shack because it’s “somewhere special” for people to go for brunch.
She said: “I’m not often out for brunch due to the nature of running restaurants, so when I am, I like to go somewhere special.
“Riley’s Fish Shack down on King Edward’s Bay in Tynemouth is one of those spots, situated right on the beach, the fires lit on a sunny winter morning.
“I prefer it to the summer crowds. They open for breakfast from 10am Friday to Sunday for things like huevos rancheros with kippers. A hot kipper wrap is always delicious, with a homemade flatbread, a sharp caper salad and a hot cup of crab soup on the side if they have it.”
