A man remains in hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a white Mercedes in an alleged assault at the weekend. 

Police were alerted after a man was hit by a car on or near Davison Drive, in Hartlepool, shortly before 8.10pm on Saturday (February 17).

A 39-year-old man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious injuries. 

Detectives are appealing for information, doorbell/dashcam or CCTV footage as they interview a man on suspicion of assault.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "A 39-year-old man sustained serious injuries after he was struck by a white Mercedes on or near Davison Drive in the town shortly before 8.10pm on Saturday (17th February).

"He is receiving hospital treatment and a 20-year-old man who was arrested today is currently being questioned on suspicion of Section 18 assault."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called just before 8.15 on the evening of Saturday 17 February to a road traffic incident involving a car and a pedestrian.

"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and the Medicar. One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital. 

"The Medicar is a joint initiative with NEAS and Cleveland Police covering their force area.  It is staffed by two Special Constables and a NEAS paramedic."
