A County Durham mum has praised her children who came to the aid of her after she shattered her leg following a fall at her home.
Kimberly Craig was walking down the stairs of her home in Howden-Le-Wear on February 6 when she tripped halfway down the stairs and landed in an unnatural position.
The mum of two, who was just about to head out on a night shift as a carer, was left screaming in pain at the bottom of the stairs after the bone of her leg was left sticking through the skin.
Despite suspecting that she'd broken her leg and being in "agony" with her leg, she has said that her daughter, Esme Hunter, 9, remained calm in the vital moment and phoned the ambulance.
After staying on the phone with the ambulance call handler, and answering all of their questions, Esme then called her mum's employers to say that she wouldn't be at work, while Kimberly's son, Bradley Hunter, 12, phoned his grandad for help.
Now in an intense level of pain, Kimberly was given a pillow from the bedroom by both kids while she waited for the ambulance for an hour and a half.
After arriving at the hospital, Kimberly was put to sleep, before undergoing an operation, where she was given a 'cage' for her leg that attached her bones back together.
Despite being on the mend, the mum of two still has to undergo another operation to remove the 'cage' - followed by several months of rehabilitation.
Following the 'scary incident', Kimberly has now praised both of her children for their help and their bravery in an intense situation.
She said: "I was screaming on the floor in pain, and Esme was just so calm in the situation - while Bradley also remained calm under pressure.
"I'm so proud of them both - they are absolute stars and helped massively in that situation.
"I couldn't be any more proud of them both, especially my daughter who dealt with this with impeccable bravery and maturity for her age. I was trying to be strong but I was in agony lying on the bottom of the stairs crying and unable to move."
Now that Kimberly is recovering, she has heaped praise on her children, while also highlighting the importance of having a phone nearby in an emergency.

She added: "My daughter after contacting the ambulance then got me a glass of water to sip to stop me being sick.
"I'm recovering but need a further operation to repair the bone and will be laid up for a while.
"I was so lucky that my children were there at the time."
