FROM too many people to awful rainy weather - here’s a round-up of some less complimentary TripAdvisor reviews of places in the Lake District...
Lake Windermere
More than ten miles in length, Windermere is England's largest lake and one of the most popular places to visit in the Lake District. During the summer, Windermere offers a wide variety of activity including cruises, fishing, boating, sailing and scuba diving.
Overall, the lake is rated 4.5 out of 5 over 4,160 reviews... but not everyone enjoyed their trip.
One review described it as ‘Blackpool with hills’ while another comment claimed Windermere has been ‘utterly ruined by profiteering’.
Another one-star review said it was ‘ruined’ by too many visitors, others said their walk turned into a ‘smelly funfair’ and complained there was ‘absolutely nothing’ to do in the rain.
Poor reviews mentioned ‘patchy’ 4G coverage and accused the area of being ‘quite run down’ and 'very busy with tourists'.
Derwentwater
This body of water near Keswick has been crowned 'Queen of the Lakes' and is rated 5 out of 5 over 2,966 reviews overall.
One review said: “Beautiful location but spoilt by the amount of dog mess on the paths, never seen so much anywhere else in the UK.”
Derwentwater was described as a ‘huge disappointment’ and accused of being ‘busy, very commercial and touristy’.
Another comment advised people to visit the ‘REAL, unspoilt lakes’ as there were 'far too many people in the way' to take landscape photos.
The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction
The attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere brings the author's magical stories to life in 3D. Learn about the famous author, meet Peter Rabbit and step into Mr McGregor’s garden before enjoying a treat at the Café.
Overall, it is rated 4.5 out of 5 over 2,891 reviews, but one comment branded the experience ‘utterly terrible’.
One review complained about ‘huge queues out into the rain’ while another described it as an ‘appalling waste of money’.
Another comment claimed the ‘stupid little film’ included absolutely nothing about the interesting life of Beatrix Potter and was followed by a ‘tightly confined walk’ through ‘meaningless displays of imitation Beatrix Potter characters’.
Orrest Head
This hill on the eastern shore of Windermere is rated 5 out of 5 over 1,753 reviews overall.
One review said it is ‘too easy’ to get to the top and it is ‘not very high’, they also said the weather ‘could have been better’.
Another comment claimed Orrest Head was ‘overly crowded’ and featured a ‘disappointing view’, they said ‘only an idiot’ would recommend it.
A one-star review said too many foot paths were labelled on the OS map, making the walk ‘too complicated’.
Lakeland Motor Museum
The museum at Backbarrow has a unique collection of 30,000 exhibits including classic cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles.
The attraction is rated 4.5 over 5 over 1,718 reviews overall but was accused of being ‘rammed’.
One review said the exhibit felt ‘claustrophobic’ while another said the size of the museum was 'disappointing' in comparison to Haynes, the British motor museum, or Beaulieu.
Another comment said: “If you like screaming kids and being hit by prams and sniffed by dogs, this place is for you.
"Don't bother if you are interested in cars, you can't get near them. Very disappointing collection.”
