A warning has been issued after recycling bins were set on fire at a County Durham park and play equipment was melted during the same incident. 

Neighbourhood police and council wardens are appealing for information from residents, following the incident, which happened on Surtees Terrace and George Street, Ferryhill. 

The incident saw recycling bins from the front of houses on the two streets in Ferryhill taken to the nearby Surtees Doorstep Green Park and set on fire.

The flames from the fire have then spread to play equipment and caused the equipment in the park to melt, scorching the grass.

Following the incident, he council have urged residents to move their recycling bins to their property as soon as they're empty, as well as keeping an eye out for future incidents. 

Alongside the warning, Durham County Council's wardens have shared an image of one of the melted bins in the park area.

A statement from the wardens also read: "Neighbourhood wardens are appealing to residents of Surtees Terrace and George Street, Ferryhill to return their refuse and recycling bins to their property after collection.

"Unfortunately, bins that have been left in the street are being set on fire in the nearby Surtees Doorstep Green Park and melting the play equipment.
