Four people were rescued by firefighters from a flat fire in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services converged on Dovecot Street in Stockton just after 6am today (Sunday, February 18) following reports of a fire. 

Firefighters from three engines tackled the flames for nearly two hours and concluded that parts of the property had been substantially damaged.

Responders rescued four people from the property during the incident.

A statement from Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "Cleveland Fire Brigade were called to report of a flat fire. Three appliances attended.

"Damage - approximately 100 per cent fire damage to the kitchen, remainder of flat 100 per cent smoke damage. Communal stairwell 100 per cent smoke damage.

"Four breathing apparatus, two hose reels, two thermal imaging camera, three smoke hoods were used. Four persons rescued by fire brigade personnel."

The North East Ambulance service (NEAS) attended the scene and assessed five patients.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6.10am today (February 18) to support the fire and rescue service at a house fire in the Stockton area.

"We dispatched a paramedic crew and clinical team leader who assessed five patients and discharged them at the scene."
