A hotel with “medieval magic” is one of the best dog-friendly hotels to visit this year, according to Good Housekeeping.

The Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland has it all from roaring fires to roll-top bathtubs and of course, 14 dog-friendly rooms with “sumptuous furnishings” and “views of the village rooftops.”

The publisher explained: “It's a well-known fact that we Brits love our pets and like to involve them in everything - including our holidays. Thankfully, there's a whole host of dog-friendly hotels in the UK that cater for pampered pooches.

“For a small extra charge, you can take your four-legged friend on a country escape or coastal retreat, and they'll be provided with plenty of treats, from dog beds and bowls to personalised gift bags and special pet menus.”

Why is The Lord Crewe Arms one of the UK’s best dog-friendly hotels for 2024?

The hotel dates back to 1165 and originally began as a guesthouse to Blanchland Abbey.

Good Housekeeping commented: “Today, it maintains much of its medieval magic with original stone walls, ogee-arched windows and roaring fires lit in stone chimneypieces.

"The hotel’s rooms, labelled ‘cosy’, ‘canny’ and ‘champion,’ feature tartan blankets and roll-top bathtubs while the suites are made even more inviting by warming log fires – the perfect spot for tired pooches to enjoy an afternoon snooze.

“The hotel is home to 14 dog-friendly rooms and you can choose between the miners’ cottages and listed annex, The Angel, which come complete with sumptuous furnishings, views of the village rooftops and woodland beyond and a delicious helping of Northumberland fudge.”

It adds: “A hot spot for country pursuits, you can head out onto the North Pennine Moors to explore the maze of walking and cycling routes in the surrounding area. Thick blankets, hot chocolate and roaring fires ensure you keep cosy on those crisp Northumberland evenings before heading back to the hotel’s gatehouse for a hearty meal. The hotel charges £20 per dog, per night.”

On Tripadvisor, one recent visitor who brought their four-legged friend along to The Lord Crewe Arms posted this review: “This was our 4th stay at the Lord Crewe Arms and was as enjoyable as ever.

“We stayed in the same Champion room across the square to the hotel with our dog and, as previously, we were welcomed very warmly.

“We loved the room and all the doggy (bed, bowl, treats) and human (tea, coffee, fresh milk, biscuits, fudge, walking map) touches in it.”
