A medieval castle in County Durham has been revealed as one of the best cosiest stays in the UK.
Lumley Castle in Chester-le-Street featured in the “25 cosiest places to stay in the UK” list by The Times.
It was praised for offering a budget-friendly “regal stay” and its impressive medieval interiors – not to mention the food has been described as “rich and traditional”.
The Times said: “February is the most giving of months, providing the perfect excuse for some do-nothing indulgence as we wait for winter to end and spring to put in an appearance.
“Dry January, which feels as if it lasted at least three months, is finally done and dusted and hopefully you’ve chipped away at those Christmas credit card bills and so have the motivation and money to treat yourself to a cosy break and finally embrace the new year in style.”

What did The Times say about Lumley Castle?
Lumley Castle is an “easy drive” away from Newcastle and Durham.
The publisher commented: “If you’re after a regal stay on a chambermaid’s budget, this 14th-century pile, in nine acres of parkland outside Chester-le-Street, hits the baronial bull’s-eye, from its atmospheric dungeons to its battlemented towers.

“The decor is full-on medieval majesty with silk swags, ruby-red velvets, heraldic wallpapers and tapestries.
“Bedrooms have vaulted ceilings, elaborate four-posters, grand fireplaces and roll-top baths.
“Dining doesn’t let the side down. The Knights Restaurant serves dishes that are as rich and traditional as the interiors, including slow-cooked braised featherblade beef with buttered mash and sticky toffee pudding."
