Paramedics who were onboard an air ambulance that landed at a Darlington sports complex on Wednesday (February 7) have released some information on the incident. 

Medical teams were seen at Darlington Railway AFC's ground near Brinkburn Road at about 9am - with ambulances attending the scene a short while later. 

While questions remained about why the medical teams were at the football ground on Wednesday, the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) has now clarified the nature of the incident. 

The emergency service has confirmed that they attended a 'medical incident' close to Brinkburn Road on Wednesday morning, and Darlington Railway AFC was the nearest location to land. 

There are no suggestions from what GNAAS has said that link the venue with the medical incident.

Paramedics who attended the incident have said that one person was taken to hospital - but they were transported to hospital via road ambulance, rather than being airlifted.

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "Our critical care team was activated at 9.13am to reports of a medical incident in Darlington.

"We had a doctor and paramedic on board our aircraft and they landed at Darlington Railway AFC at 9.20am, which was close to the scene.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient, and the patient was taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service road crew, accompanied by our team."
