Cleveland Police were called to Redcar beach yesterday (February 5) after reports of a suspected explosive device.

The object was discovered in the sand near the Stray cafe.

Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team inspected the device.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police gave the following update: "

"EOD officers attended the scene and deemed the object safe.

"The cordon has been lifted and the area is open to the public. Thank you for your patience."

They previously said: "A cordon is currently in place on Redcar beach near the Stray café after a suspected explosive device was discovered in the sand.

"Cleveland Police officers are currently in the area and are working closely with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers who will assess the object.

"Officers are urging members of the public to avoid the area whilst the incident is dealt with."
