A car fire caused long delays for commuters on the A19 northbound near Sunderland this morning.

Emergency services converged on the A19 close to Boldon, Sunderland this morning (February 5) before 7am following reports of a car on fire. 

Following the incident, delays stretched as far back as Old Burdon, close to Seaham during rush hour.

Police and the fire service have now confirmed they attended the scene and that nobody was injured.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 6.45am today (Monday), we received a report of a car on fire on the A19 southbound close to Boldon.

"Fire crews are still at the scene and officers are in attendance to assist with traffic co-ordination. 

"Thankfully nobody was injured and the vehicle is in the process of being recovered."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 6:46am about a vehicle fire on the A19 near to the Testos roundabout.

"Two appliances were on scene in a matter of minutes to extinguish the fire.

"Thankfully no one was in the vehicle at the time of the fire.

"The fire is now extinguished and our crews left the scene at 7:11am."

Traffic on the A19 is now running smoothly following the incident.
