A café has been told to make improvements after a council food hygiene and standards inspection found a dirty floor and poor housekeeping.
The Worx, in Ennis Square, Dormanstown, Redcar, was given a ‘1’ rating on the sliding scale of 0 to 5 used by the Food Standards Agency – 0 requiring urgent improvement and 5 being very good.
An inspection carried out last month found that the floor throughout the premises was dirty and the floor was also damaged in a food preparation area, meaning it was not capable of being effectively cleaned.
Housekeeping was said to be “poor” with certain areas not accessible to be cleaned.
A report by Redcar and Cleveland Council’s food safety team said these issues needed to be addressed immediately or formal action could be commenced.
There was also no evidence of a documented food hygiene management procedure and no documentation to demonstrate that potential risks to customers had been considered.
The council told the proprietor: “In addition the condition of the premises at the time of the inspection demonstrated that you did not have procedures in place to maintain suitable standards of hygiene in your food preparation areas.”
The inspection further revealed no evidence of food hygiene training or the management of allergens.

The report said: “You must ensure that all staff have suitable/sufficient knowledge of their duties and the steps they need to maintain food safety.
“You must be able to demonstrate that you have considered the risk to your customers with allergies and intolerances.”
Information also needed to be provided, on request, about 14 key allergens which could be used in the ingredients for food.
The Worx was shuttered on the day the Local Democracy Reporting Service visited in order to obtain a comment. Several calls were also made to the premises.
Food outlets given a rating can request a re-inspection after carrying out any remedial work detailed under legal requirements.
