A County Durham man has been jailed for eight months after carrying a knife through a busy train station, before boarding a train.

Kyle Craig Morrow, 24, of Rose Avenue, South Moor, was spotted by a member of the public carrying a kitchen knife through Newcastle Central Station last year.

Following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation, Morrow pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced by South Tyneside magistrates on Wednesday, January 17.

The court heard how, on Sunday, June 26 last year, officers received a report through the BTP text service 61016 from a member of rail staff that a passenger had spotted Morrow carrying a knife at Newcastle Central Station.

Officers attended the station and located Morrow on board a train.

He was found to be carrying a kitchen knife in the waistband of his trousers and was arrested.

Morrow was also further arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

In police interview, Morrow claimed he didn't know he was carrying the knife and that someone else must have put it there without his knowledge.

Following the sentencing, investigating officer PC David Waggot said: "Thanks to a vigilant member of the public and the fast response from officers Morrow was apprehended and a potentially deadly weapon removed from the railway network.

"There is no reason for anyone to be carrying a knife in a public place.

"Morrow's swift arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of our discreet text service which allows passengers and rail staff to report anything that causes them concern discreetly and effectively, without raising the attention of the suspect."
