Dozens of firefighters have been tackling a blaze in a derelict building on a Middlesbrough industrial estate this afternoon. 

Emergency services were alerted to the fire on an industrial estate in the Cargo Fleet Lane area of the town, as thick black plumes of smoke were seen for miles across Teesside. 

Cleveland Fire Brigade dispatched at least ten appliances to the scene on Westerby Road, Skippers Lane Industrial Estate, Middlesbrough. The Northern Echo: Fire in derelict building at Skippers Lane Industrial Estate in Middlesbrough

Police were also at the scene, as members of the public were advised to avoid the area. 

The fire is reported to have broken out in a derelict building next to the Crystal Galleries.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said earlier: "We are currently in attendance at an incident on Westerby Road, Skippers Lane in Middlesbrough.

"Ten fire engines are at the scene and nearby residents and businesses have been told to keep windows closed."

The area was cordoned off as firefighters dealt with the incident.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "We are aware of a building fire in Westerby Road near Skippers Lane, but have been informed by our Fire Brigade colleagues that there is no current requirement for police to attend."
