Police have named a pedestrian who died after being hit by a car near on the outskirts of a North East village yesterday (Wednesday, January 24).

Craig Morrow, 42, from the Gateshead area, was fatally injured after being struck by a black Volkswagen Golf travelling westbound on the A695 Ryton, between Woodside Lane and Stargate Lane, near Gateshead

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Specialist officers are supporting his family at this time.

"The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene to assist with enquiries, and the investigation remains ongoing.

"The Force’s Motor Patrols team have already spoken to a number of witnesses, and are still keen to speak to anyone else who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam or CCTV footage."

Sergeant Steve Chappell, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can."
