Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a car this morning.
Emergency services were called after a 42-year-old man suffered serious injuries on the A695 at Ryton shortly after 6.10am.
It was reported that a black Volkswagen Golf had been travelling westbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it has struck the man.
He was pronounced dead a short time later at the scene.
The man's family have been notified and are currently being supported by specialist officers.
The road was closed in both directions for almost five hours.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to assist with enquiries, and an investigation has now been launched.
Officers have already spoken to a number of witnesses, and are keen to speak to anyone else who is yet to come forward.
They are especially interested in hearing from anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and may have dashcam or CCTV footage.
Sergeant Steve Chappell, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can.
"An investigation has been launched, and we are determined to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
