Storm Jocelyn: Car crushed by wall and gate in Cullercoats

As the North East was hit by winds of up to 55mph, which caused problems on the road, rails, and houses losing power. 

However, in Cullercoats, the owner of a Ford Ka had an unfortunate start to the day after their car was hit by a brick wall and a metal gate. 

Winds overnight and into Wednesday morning meant that the car's back window was put through and bricks fell on top of the vehicle's roof.

In images, which were taken by North News, the car could be seen with significant damage to it, while the wall could be seen still balanced on the top of the car and a gate dented in. 

Elsewhere, felled trees, power issues for homes, and closed roads, due to flooding and debris were features of this morning.

The A66 from Bowes is closed to all vehicles, due to the impact of wind, while other roads, like the A19 near Middlesbrough and the 189 Redheugh Bridge both ways from A184 Askew Road (Redheugh Bridge) to A695 Scotswood Road in Newcastle is closed to high sided vehicles. 

A yellow warning runs until 1pm on Wednesday, with the wind set to calm throughout the day.

Parts of North Yorkshire have been affected by flooding with river flooding probable in parts of the north of England on Wednesday, the Environment Agency said.

The number of flood warnings – meaning flooding was expected – had reached 21 in England and 37 in Scotland.

While there are 37 UK flood alerts, only eight of those cover the North East and North Yorkshire.

Forecasters expect winds to gradually ease from the south as Storm Jocelyn moves away from the UK on Wednesday, which will be a day of sunny spells and blustery showers, although mainly dry in the south.

Today: Winds easing following the passage of Storm Jocelyn, although gale strength gusts likely persisting over the Pennines into the late afternoon. Bright or sunny for most, with isolated showers in the west dying off through the morning. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight: Light winds overnight. Staying dry, with clear spells developing to allow for a chilly night in places. Cloud increasing through the early hours, bringing rain to western hills before dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Thursday: Breezy on Thursday with spells of occasionally heavy rain and drizzle moving in from the west. Winds increasing through the evening with gales likely over the Pennines. Mild. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday: Staying breezy through the period. Friday and Saturday should stay mostly dry with bright or sunny spells. Sunday looks likely to see spells of rain at times. Mild.
