Calling a certain location 'beautiful' or ugly is very subjective - given people's preferences and what they consider to be beautiful - whether that's architecture, green spaces or the cleanliness of a place.
However, according to online rankings, several locations in County Durham and North Yorkshire have been called 'beautiful', while others have been branded 'ugly'.
Various areas have even made it into The Telegraph's list of ugly locations, while some other places have been called 'picturesque' and branded 'the poshest place in the UK'.
Back in November 2023, Stanley in County Durham, which is known as one of the many former mining towns of the county, ranked highly but for all of the wrong reasons in The Telegraph's list of ugliest towns across the UK.
The former pit location was ranked among the 1250 towns that populate the UK and was named as one of seven of the ugliest places, both in terms of looks and how the high street looks.
In the rankings, it got a score of 28 out of 50, based on shop fronts, historic architecture, litter and traffic, views and greenery.
Despite scoring eight out of ten for its views, lending it to its near countryside location, it was scored three in shop fronts and four in historical architecture.
Travel journalist Helen Pickles noted that the mix of charity shops, betting shops and takeaways detracted from the nearby countryside views in Stanley.
The description in the Telegraph read: "On the top of a low hill, with views over fields and woodland, and the sprawl of Newcastle in the distance, Stanley has an enviable location.
"But, like many County Durham former mining towns, landscape views can’t make up for the loss of its major economy."
However, last year wasn't all doom and gloom for North East and North Yorkshire locations - after Staithes was named in the most picturesque locations in the world and Brancepeth, County Durham was called one the poshest location in the UK.
While the UK may not enjoy the same weather as warmer parts of the world, it does boast idyllic villages like Staithes on the seaside in North Yorkshire.
As part of the list, which was made by Faraway Furniture, the most beautiful village in the world was named as Cinque Terres, which boasts tourists from around the world on the Italian Riviera.
But a little closer to home, Staithes took 17th place.

Meanwhile, Brancepeth was included in The Telegraph's roundup of the country's 54 smartest villages - which saw it rank among some of the most picturesque locations around.
With ivy-covered cottages, this former colliery village may be small but has an almighty beauty and was given eighth place in the rankings.
Brancepeth Castle dates back to the 12th century, with a cafe in the gatehouse and even a golf course next to the village hall.
