Darlington is home to a number of fantastic bakeries, but here is a list of the four independent ones that you should try.

If you're looking for something a little different from a Greggs or Cooplands then these are some specialist bakeries worth a go.

You can get your hands on sourdoughs at Bakerman to cakes and pastries at The Leas Bakery.

Some are not in the middle of town so you might never have seen them before.

Here are the bakeries you should try:

1. Bakerman, 9 Clarks Yard, Darlington, DLE 7QH

In a New Year's post Bakerman are promoting their guest loaf of the week which is a cheddar and marmite sourdough. They are open as usual 9:00 - 2:30 or until stock lasts.

2. Number Eight Bakehouse, 21 Post House Wynd, Darlington, DL3 7LP

You only need to check out this bakeries Facebook page to realise that you will want to visit. Pictures from inside the shop show rows of delicious doughnuts and incredible sandwiches. They are open Wednesday to Saturday 10:00 - 4:00.

3. Bank Top Bakery, 127 Victoria Rd, Darlington DL1 5JJ

This bakery has some glowing Google reviews from satisfied customers congratulating the bakers on fantastic cakes. One reviewer said: "Ditch your greggs and get to Bank Top Bakery! Fresh baked flakey pastries and delicious cakes! So good!"
