A man was taken to hospital with slash injuries to his face and hand after being allegedly attacked by an intruder in a North East property, police have confirmed.
Police said a woman fled the property unhurt after the incident at High Newham Court in Hardwick, Stockton, at 5am on Monday (January 8) .
A man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm and later released on police bail. 
A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Police were alerted to an aggravated burglary at High Newham Court in Hardwick, Stockton, when they received a call at 5am on Monday 8 January.
"A 47-year-old man inside of the property sustained slash injuries to his face and hand and was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees.
"A 31-year-old woman fled the property uninjured. A 42-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm.
"He was questioned by officers, then released on bail whilst further enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference number SE24004147.
