A man has been arrested and another taken to hospital after a suspected stabbing in the heart of Newcastle’s nightlife scene.
Police were initially called to Grainger Street after reports of a ‘disturbance’ between two people.
A man in his 20s was found with serious injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article. He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains.
A wide cordon was erected a short distance away in the early hours of Friday (December 26) at the bottom of the Bigg Market - part of the city known for its clubs and late-night venues.
It spans the Cloth Market, High Bridge and the Bigg Market with several popular venues including The Beehive pub, Pumphreys bar and restaurant Simply Greek Brunch House among those unreachable.
A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody.
An investigation is now underway.
Detectives say they believe those involved are known to each other and that there is no wider risk to the public.
Uniformed officers will remain at the scene on Friday (December 29) while enquiries continue, Northumbria Police said.
A force spokesperson added: “An investigation was launched to establish the full circumstances and locate those involved.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police by using the ‘Report’ page of our website, or by calling 101, quoting log NP-20231229-0057”.
Paramedics and air ambulance ground responders rushed to the scene to treat the man.
