Darlington, areas of Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire have been placed under a yellow weather warning as rain is expected to batter the region after Christmas. 

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for December 27 after forecasters predicted that heavy rain will hit the region. 

The yellow weather warning is westerly, meaning Darlington, Stockton, and parts of North Yorkshire are expected to face inclement weather, whilst Middlesbrough, Durham, Hartlepool and Newcastle escape. 

The warning is in place from 3am on Wednesday morning (December 27) until 6pm that evening.

For the remainder of Christmas Day, forecasters have said cloud will thicken from the west, ahead of a band of patchy light rain and drizzle.

Rain is expected to perhaps be heavy at times through the afternoon, mainly over western hills, with winds strengthening. Clearer spells forming in the east later, with a maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight, rain and cloud be fairly confined to western hills overnight, spreading into northern areas ahead of dawn. Winds are also expected to ease during the early morning, with isolated frost possible in prone spots, and a minimum temperature 3 °C.
