CHILDREN from a North-East primary school delighted supermarket shoppers and raised money with their first live performance since forming a new choir.
The school choir from Moorside Primary School, in Consett, was joined by the school’s Year 5 class for a carol performance at the town’s branch of Tesco Extra.
The 26 children treated shoppers to an hour-long performance, which included festive favourites such as Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Ding Dong Merrily On High.
They were accompanied by Year 5 teacher, Hollie McMullan, who said: “We haven’t had a school choir for the last few years, but I noticed when I joined the school that we didn’t really sing compared to how I remembered my primary school days, and I thought that was a shame. Singing has been proven to improve mental health, and it really just cheers you up.
“Our headteacher, Louise Templeton, agreed wholeheartedly, and fully backed me to re-form the school choir. This was our first public performance, and the children excelled themselves.”
The choir took the opportunity to raise money for school funds by rattling buckets between songs. All money raised will go towards enrichment activities in school, and towards a residential visit next year.
Store manager, Shardy Illingworth, said: “We were very pleased to welcome the children of Moorside Primary School to our store, and I have to say they gave a wonderful performance.
“They really added to the festive atmosphere, and helped lift the spirits of our shoppers and staff. It was lovely to have them. It was a pleasure to have them with us.”

Louise Templeton, executive headteacher of Moorside Primary, said: “We have historically had a school choir, but this is the first year following Covid-19 that it has reformed. We are also singing for the residents of the local care home and the children have made Christmas cards for them.
“I would like to say a big thank you to Shardy and her team at Tesco for having us, to our generous audience members, and to the children themselves for all the hard work they’ve put into this.
“We hope to raise a little Christmas cheer across Consett and bring a smile to the faces of our local community.”
