Plans have been lodged for the construction of a new veterinary centre on the site of a former troubled Wallsend pub.
North Tyneside Council has received proposals for a new veterinary surgery, complete with three consultation rooms, on the site of the former Carville Hotel pub on Carville Road.
If approved, the plans would mark a further expansion of Blythman and Partners Veterinary Practice which has eight practices across the North East, including Gosforth, Westerhope, Hebburn, Whitburn, and Gateshead.
Documents submitted to the local authority claim the new practice would generate five full-time jobs as well as a single part-time position. The possible redevelopment will bring 200 sqm of vacant land back into use with 15 parking spaces available.
The Carville Hotel was ravaged by fire in the early hours of April 30, 2010, several months after it had closed its doors for the final time. The building had already by then become a hotspot for vandalism.
Before the blaze, the pub had proved controversial with Northumbria Police who applied for the pub to have its alcohol licence reviewed in June 2007.

The review was brought on following 44 incidents of anti-social behaviour including a knife attack, several assaults, and incidents of drug possession.
Northumbria Police asked North Tyneside Council to review the pub’s licence again in 2009 after further reports emerged of disorder including physical injury to staff and customers.
The application was received by the local authority on October 3, 2023, and a decision has yet to be made.
