Construction is well underway on a brand new 65,000 sqft retail park which will include a Tesco Superstore and Home Bargains and is due to open next year.
The Houghton Colliery Retail Park in Houghton le Spring, Sunderland, is quickly taking shape after construction on the £20m project began in May of this year.
By Autumn 2024, shoppers will be able to take advantage of a 45,000 sqft Tesco Superstore and petrol station as well as a 20,000 sqft Home Bargains shop which are both expected to bring 100 jobs to the area.
A 300 bay car park has also been included in plans.
Updated pictures of the site in December 2023 now show the foundations of the park, revealing the Home Bargains will be built at the north point of the site, and the Tesco store will face east.

Gavin Cordwell-Smith, chief executive at Hellens Group previously said before work began: “We are delighted to begin clearance work on the former colliery site with construction due to commence in May this year.
“As a Sunderland-based company, we are committed to supporting local regeneration projects and seeing the area benefit from multi-million pound developments.
The site's development comes four years after Sunderland City Council’s cabinet agreed to sell the former colliery - which had been empty for 40 years - to developers Hellens Group and Fintry Estates.
