An air ambulance landed in a park in the centre of Darlington today (Thursday, December 7) following reports of a medical incident. 

The Great North Air Ambulance was alerted to the incident at a private address in Darlington with the helicopter landing at North Lodge Park, which was the safest place to land,  at about 1.30pm.

Bystanders described seeing the helicopter circling the area before it landed. 

A doctor and paramedic worked alongside colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service before the patient was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "The air ambulance was alerted at 1.26pm to a medical incident in Darlington. We had a paramedic and a doctor on board.

"We arrived at the scene at 1.35pm. Our team worked alongside a crew from the North East Ambulance Service to assist and treat the patient. We did not airlift the patient and returned to base."

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 12.49h today (7 DEC) to attend a medical incident at a private address in the Darlington area.

Two paramedic ambulances, a clinical team leader and the air ambulance were dispatched. One patient was taken to hospital."
