Plans to build 12 new homes on the outskirts of a Wensleydale village have been submitted to North Yorkshire Council.

A planning statement has been prepared by 4:18 Architecture on behalf of the applicants, a Mr and Mrs Blackburn from Thornton Steward, for 12 homes on land at Blewhouse Lane, Fingall, near Leyburn.

According to the planning statement, the proposed dwellings will adhere to the local vernacular for the area.

The walls will predominantly be made of natural stone, while the roofs are to be covered with concrete tiles. To add variety to the development's street scene, different materials, such as pantiled roofs, will be used.

However, several letters of opposition have also been submitted to the council about the unsuitability of the area for more homes.

Philip Robinson, from Fingall, said: "I have examined the plans with regard to the above planning application. I live very close by and use the public footpath that goes through the site.

"I wish to object strongly to the development of these houses in this location.

"A housing development is not in keeping with the layout of a small village such as Finghall in a location surrounded by many other existing properties and the size of the development is totally out of character with the village.

"Finghall does not have services and amenities such as a shop, play area or footpaths along the narrow roads of the village. Indeed Blewhouse Lane is single track with already severely eroded and damaged verges which additional traffic using a new housing development would exacerbate.

"Public transport for the village is minimal meaning anyone living here relies on private cars for transport. Increased traffic on Blewhouse Lane would become a real safety issue."

Another resident, Ann Lincoln, said: "Finghall village is typified by houses facing each other across the street in a "linear" fashion with private, open aspects to the rear.

"This proposed new development does not fit this pattern and is completely out of character with the rest of the village and would look out of place.

"It would severely detract from the appearance of a small Dales village such as Finghall.

"The proposed development borders the boundaries of 29 houses in the village and would adversely affect their residential amenity."
