Lloyds has announced plans to close another 45 bank branches across the UK, including one in the North East.
The banking giant has already closed three locations in our region since April, and already had another two planned in the coming months.
The branch in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside is the latest loss with staff and customers being informed it will pull down the shutters in a year’s time on November 13, 2024.
Lloyds said the decision was made following “an in-depth review” into how its customers use its branches.
It said half of customers banking at the Whitley Bay branch had also used other Lloyds branches, and that 78% of customers also used online or telephone banking.
The decision means the nearest Lloyds branch will be in North Shields.
It’s the latest branch to close in Whitley Bay after a string of closures this year.
Four branches there including HSBC, Halifax, NatWest and Barclays – which closes on Friday - have all shut down in the coastal town since April. It leaves Santander and Nationwide as the only banks in the town.
The 45 branches announced to close include some Lloyds, some Halifax, and some Bank of Scotland sites. All three brands come under the Lloyds Banking Group umbrella.
Twenty-six branches across the North East and North Yorkshire have shut down so far this year leaving many customers without a local store.
Another eight have been earmarked for closure by various bank brands with the final withdrawals to be made in the coming months.
