A North East fish and chip shop has divided opinion after introducing battered sprouts onto its menu in time for Christmas.

The Almighty Cod in Hartlepool created a clear divide after introducing the new delicacy in its shop on The Front earlier this month.

Revealing them in the food venue on November 22, the chippy triumphantly put on its social media channels that it would be creating battered sprouts and pigs in blankets.

While the pigs in blankets didn't come in for much criticism, some customers took aim at the venues' choice to batter sprouts.

Already causing a split in families and friends over the Christmas period, some felt that The Almighty Cod had gone "too far" in battering sprouts and should "stick to fish and chips".

But others defended the move from the Hartlepool-based chippy and said that they'd definitely give them a go.

This isn't the first time that The Almighty Cod has offered battered sprouts, with the venue putting them on the menu last year as well.

After putting out a picture of battered sprouts and pigs in blankets on its social media page, with the caption, "Our pigs in blankets & battered spouts are back for Christmas", it was a free for all in the comment section.

Taking aim at the battered sprouts, one person said: "There's no rhyme or reason why you have to do that," while another simply said: "What is that abomination?"

However, it wasn't all hate for the seasonal vegetables in the comments section, with one person defending them by saying: "I LOVE sprouts and would definitely give these a go," while another joked: "This is what Christmas is about - I for one am up for it!"
