During the incident, the woman was unable to call police but managed to get a message to a family member who contacted the police for help.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Genyfer Smith, said “The victim has suffered immeasurably not only just physically but emotionally and psychologically as a result of Kettlewell’s actions.

"I would like to take this opportunity to commend the victim and the witnesses in this case for their bravery and strength in coming forward and remaining supportive of the investigation.”

DC Smith added: “Tackling violence against women and girls continues to be a priority for Cleveland Police and we would urge anyone affected to report online or via the 101 number.

"We can offer safeguarding and support whilst enquiries take place, and we’ll do all we can to bring perpetrators before the courts.”
