Network Rail has issued an update on a landslip between Darlington and Newcastle that is causing UK-wide disruptions on the rail network.

The delays are affecting London North Eastern Railway, CrossCountry and Transpennine Express between York and Newcastle, which also impacts people travelling from Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, and Chester Le Street.

So far this morning, trains have been delayed, cancelled and diverted, due to fewer trains being able to run on all lines.

It's believed that the incident happened earlier today (November 8) and involves a landslip near Newton Aycliffe.

Since the disruption began, details of the incident have remained scarce.

But Network Rail has put out an update - highlighting that its staff are doing all they can to resolve the issue and hope that the East Coast Mainline can reopen fully soon.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We are aware of a suspected landslip in the Aycliffe area causing disruption to train services between Darlington and Newcastle.

“Network Rail teams are on site and working to resolve the situation to return to a normal service. Trains are still running on one line in the affected area but this means a reduced service is in operation. We are sorry for the inconvenience and disruption and thank passengers for their patience and understanding."

Transport companies have also been keeping customers up to date with the incident.

LNER put out a statement about the incident, which read: "#LNERUpdate Due to a landslip between Darlington and Newcastle, services are subject to delays when passing in the surrounding area.
