Rail passengers have been urged not to travel during Storm Ciaran as disruption is expected across the network.

Operator LNER ‘strongly advised’ customers to avoid travelling on Thursday or Friday (November 2/3) as bad weather hits.

Yellow weather warnings are in place across the region for heavy rain brought by Storm Ciaran, due to last until 6am on Friday. Train services will be subject to delays and cancellations amid the unpleasant weather.

LNER said: “We strongly advise customers to avoid travelling on Thursday 2 November and Friday 3 November.

“Some LNER trains will be running, but there is likely to be major disruption including severe delays, short notice cancellations and overcrowding. There may be service alterations on Saturday 4 November as we work towards reinstating our normal timetable.”

Tickets for travel on Thursday and Friday will now be valid until Tuesday of next week.

The operator has reduced its service levels with trains between Newcastle and Edinburgh running hourly from 3pm until the end of service on Friday.

No trains will run between Edinburgh and Aberdeen after 10.30am on Thursday, until Saturday, in either direction.

Meanwhile TransPennine Express said services between Newcastle and Edinburgh will be subject to delays, with the operator urging passengers to check their journeys before setting off for the station.

Northern services between Newcastle and Carlisle are running at reduced speed due to the weather. The operator said services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
