Many mums across the world often feel that they struggle to find clothing that’s right for them; it never quite fits with their busy lives and is often unflattering or uncomfortable. JustSelfish intends to change that.
The Stanley boutique, JustSelfish, began in 2017 from the dining room of its founder, Krissy Coulson.
After previous employment in the e-commerce market, Krissy used the knowledge and experience she’d gained throughout her career to begin to dabble with a business of her own.
Selling on Facebook, she brought in clothes from a variety of different suppliers to find which products were right for JustSelfish.
After having a second child, Krissy recognised a gap in the market; she “couldn’t find any clothing suitable for [her] new postpartum body”. As she wasn’t looking for something particularly short or sheer, she began searching for clothes to suit her lifestyle (which now incorporated running around after her kids).
Krissy states that she chose the name ‘JustSelfish’ because mums tend to spend much more money and time on their children than themselves, often buying high-quality brands and ensuring that their children have the best of everything.
She stated that “our self care tends to go out the window a bit” in relation to herself and other mums.
Krissy considers her business to be an opportunity for fellow mums to spend a small amount of money on themselves, finding clothes that make them feel great.
“It’s nice to have something that’s specifically for mums that’s affordable,” she explains, noting that boutiques generally have a reputation for being expensive.
She wants her customers to feel satisfied after having the chance to enjoy an authentic boutique experience for an affordable price. JustSelfish specifically focuses on how a customer feels when they buy something from the shop, either in-store or online.
JustSelfish offers one-on-one service and fashion advice to help customers find the items right for them, considering a variety of occasions; this can range from doing a school run or going for a night out.
On top of that, with the shop’s digital presence on Facebook, customers can send in pictures of themselves wearing the clothes they purchased. This allows other women to send in likes and comments and provides a great confidence boost.
The stock of JustSelfish is carefully selected to fit the lifestyle for busy mums, with a large portion of the process including Krissy writing down the things a mum would do in a day and selecting clothing that would fit into those activities.
Krissy explained that she “hope[s] this inspires other people to start up a business” and help them to believe that anyone can achieve whatever they dream of if they put their mind to it and put in the work.
Her advice for those hoping to start a business is to “research as much as you can” and that nothing worthwhile ever comes easily.
