Newton Aycliffe residents have been warned to lock their doors and hide their car keys after a wave of thefts in the area.
Homes in Russell Court and Honister Place were targeted earlier this week.
The police believe that opportunists are operating in the area looking for homes with car keys on display.
Newton Aycliffe Police are appealing to anyone who has seen anything suspicious to get in touch.
Check your ring doorbell footage or any security cameras you have around your property.
They have issued some guidance for Newton Aycliffe residents on how to secure their houses and deter thieves.
A police spokesperson: "It’s happening in your town
"Newton Aycliffe residents are being urged to lock their homes and keep car keys out of sight after officers see a spike in thefts.
"It comes after homes in Honister Place and Russell Court were targeted earlier this week.
"It is believed the opportunists are targeting insecure and unlocked homes with car keys on display."
Simple advice can help protect you from becoming a victim:
- Lock all doors (even if you’re at home)
- Keep your car keys out of sight
- A well-lit home can give the impression that someone is in
- If you have a house alarm, use it
- Don’t leave valuables on show
