A new book about what it's like to be a GP in one of the most deprived areas of the country will be launched this weekend (Saturday, October 28).
The Heart of the Matter, by County Durham GP Kas Hawes, aims to reveal "the unvarnished truth" of being a GP in today’s climate - both the professional and the personal.
The author said: "General practice continues to be a very topical area for media interest and I am presenting a very unique and personal account from the other side of the government and media perspective.

"I am hoping that it will enlighten readers not just about illnesses and their own health but also about how we think and work as GPs."
The book will be launched at The Grange, in Darlington, on Saturday, October 28, from 7pm. Open to all, there will be live music with signed copies of the book on sale.
A book signing event willo also take place at Strickland and Holt in Yarm from 2pm to 4pm today (October 27). Durham Waterstones on Saturday, November 4 from 2pm to 4pm and Waterstones in Darlington on Thursday, December 7 from 4pm. Dates for signings at Yarm and Northallerton Waterstones are to be confirmed.
