Police are investigating after a schoolgirl was injured after a BB gun was fired into a County Durham school on Thursday (October 12).

The incident happened at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, on Tyne Road East, in South Moor, at about 1pm, which saw the girl sustain a small cut to her leg. 

Durham Police say that no one else is believed to have been injured during the incident, and it's thought that the BB gun was fired from outside the school premises.

A youth has been interviewed and is currently helping with enquiries.

Two toy BB guns and a quantity of pellets have been seized.

Sergeant Terry Archbold, of Stanley Neighbourhood Beat Team, said: “We are treating this as an isolated incident, and I would like to reassure our community that there is no information to suggest a further threat.

“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened.”

The school has been approached for a comment.
