North East radio presenter Paul ‘Goffy’ Gough has announced that he’ll be leaving BBC Radio Tees at the end of the month after ten years at the station.

Goffy, who has worked with Century Radio, TFM & Metro,  informed BBC Radio Tees bosses earlier this year that it was time for him to quit the station so that he could pursue new ventures.

His decision earlier this year came ahead of the huge restructuring of BBC local radio that would follow.

He was originally due to leave in the summer of this year but BBC Radio Tees Managing Editor Dan Thorpe was keen for him to stay and complete a ten-year milestone for his weekend shows.

Since Autumn 2013, he has presented the ‘Goffy at the Weekend’ show.

Goffy said: “When I first sat down with Dan Thorpe ten years ago he persuaded me to get back on air and to draft a format that I thought listeners would enjoy. The format was playing surprise songs that had connectable local memories, being interactive, inspirational, having big-name guests and most importantly - fun!

“I must say that every show has been both a joy to present and produce for the past decade of weekends and I’ve loved the journey with my listeners. I hope that I have ticked the many listening boxes for them over the years as that means everything to me.

“Dan has been brilliant and we recently completed the ten-year anniversary with some great guests and friends joining me on air – Alan Shearer, Tony Blackburn, Sir Geoff Boycott, Tim Healy and many more."

While it might be the end of Goffy's weekend shows, the presenter has opened the door to making some BBC documentaries for the station.

Already, he has made a total of six documentaries for writing, producing and presenting.

Goffy added: “Staying on for the extra period after announcing my decision to leave has also allowed me the time to put some music specials together including one with the legendary Chris Rea – so I have definitely used my extra time to tick plenty of personal boxes. I am delighted that Dan encouraged me to stay for the duration.

“I will really miss my lovely listeners most though and will never forget the special anniversary party night in Middlesbrough when we had a full house to reminisce about our ten years together – that will always be super special to me.

"My decision to stay around a touch longer has given me more time to say a heartfelt massive thanks to them when I’m on air”

His boss Dan Thorpe was quick to praise Goffy’s contribution to BBC Radio Tees. He said: “Goffy’s been a class act, a thorough professional and a total joy to work with across the ten years. We wish him every success in the future.”

The final ‘Goffy at the Weekend’ show will be on Sunday, October 29 on BBC Radio Tees 2-4pm.
