Bradley Lowery's mum has said she was moved to tears after fans held up a banner in a touching tribute to her son at a Sunderland game this week.

Gemma Lowery took to social media yesterday (October 5), writing an emotional response to fans who held up a banner for her son at Wednesday's Sunderland vs. Watford game on October 4.

Held up by Black Cat fans, the banner read "There's only one Bradley Lowery" aside a picture of the club's mascot hugging young Bradley.

Fans then cheered during the 6th minute of the match in tribute to Bradley, who passed away after a long fight with neuroblastoma aged 6 in 2017.

In a post on the Bradley Lowery Foundation Facebook page, the mum described how overwhelming her emotions were at the gesture.

She wrote: "Wow, last night at the Sunderland vs. Watford game the fans really showed how much Brad was loved.

"Before the game, there was a big surfer flag - thank you to the spirit of 37 for organising that.

"At the 6th minute, everyone in the stadium clapped and some sang there is only one Bradley Lowery.

"My hurt could have burst with pride and I had tears strolling down my face, but these were happy tears, as it's really overwhelming to see how many people Brad's life touched and how many people are still supporting him and his legacy.

"Thank you to everyone from the bottom of my heart."

This gesture from fans comes less than a week after a Sheffield Wednesday fan was arrested following a photo that circulated social media showing a man holding up a photo of Bradley Lowery during a match.

Dale Houghton, 31, admitted a public order offence at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court following the incident and District Judge James Gould told him all sentence options were open, including a prison sentence.

Football fans from around the UK have also raised just over £28,000 (as of October 6) for The Bradley Lowery Foundation on a GoFundMe page set up by a Sheffield Wednesday fan.

Leanne Wood, a member of the Sheffield Wednesday Women’s Supporters Group started up the fundraiser and spoke to the club about how pleased she was at the result.

Leanne told swfc.co.uk: “I saw the images circulating and they made me feel sick.

“So I had the idea of a fundraiser to combat this and show that those actions do not in any way reflect us as a fanbase. I put the idea to the Women’s Supporter Group and they said they would support me all the way with this.

“We’ve got some of the best fans in the country, home and away. Wednesday fans, and the people of Sheffield in general, have hearts of gold and I had no doubt they would get behind this.

“Bradley’s family and the Bradley Lowery Foundation reached out to say how grateful they are – these donations make a massive difference to the foundation, to help raise awareness and research to combat this terrible disease is vital.”
