County Durham residents have condemned "senseless vandalism" after a fallen tree and log sculpture were pictured covered in pink spray paint.

A fallen tree and a deer sculpture located off Burn Hill Way in Newton Aycliffe was last week vandalised with pink spray paint.

The images, posted online, garnered a response from frustrated locals who condemned the graffiti that can be seen sprayed across the objects.

One branded the act as "senseless vandalism" whilst one commenter hit out at the "disgraceful people" possible.

Another asked: "My god what's the matter with people?"

A statement from the Works and Environment Manager at Great Aycliffe Town Council has confirmed the graffiti has now been washed away.

They said: "Great Aycliffe Town Council were made aware of the graffiti over the weekend of 30th September.

"Operatives attempted to remove as much of the paint as they could over the weekend but needed to return early this week with an industrial power washer to remove all of the graffiti from the sculpture and numerous other points in the surrounding area of Woodham Burn.

"Durham County Council’s Enforcement Team have been involved in attempting to identify the culprits.

"Thankfully, this appears to be an isolated incident at the moment, however, anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Durham Police on 101."
