A public garden in Northumberland has been named as one of the best to visit in the UK, just in time to watch the seasons change.

The North East attraction was ranked in sixth place in the ‘UK's most popular public park and picnic spot’ list according to research by price comparison site Idealo.

The experts analysed Instagram hashtags and Google search volumes to reveal the most popular gardens around the UK, helping nature enthusiasts plan the perfect day trip.

Alnwick Garden named among the UK's best public gardens to visit this autumn

Idealo said: “Coming in sixth is Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, which sees 33,100 Google searches per month and over 34,400 tagged Instagram posts.

“The garden sits beside Alnwick Castle, and promises a fun day out for the whole family. Its Poison Garden is perhaps the most tantalising feature of all, housing 100 species of dangerous and toxic plants that are only available to admire through a carefully guided tour.

One visitor said: “Gardens look great in early autumn. Lots of green. Amazing topiary. Fruit on the crab apples displays. Winding path through the fruit trees that are just starting to turn red and bronze. And the water features of course. Good coffee. Great day out. Also fun on the crazy golf, as always.”
