The tramway, built in 1884, was originally constructed to help Victorian holidaymakers up and down the steep incline between beach and town.
The structure has since become an iconic mainstay of the beachfront and a tourist attraction in itself.
Residents reacted to the news with joy and pride at the news of the award.
