A road that runs alongside a North East hospital has been closed for maintenance after a burst pipe led to a small flood of water.

West Dyke Road, near Redcar Hospital, has been closed whilst workers carry out emergency repairs to a pipe that burst last night (September 15).

The closure has been marked on the AA Traffic map, meaning motorists and pedestrians will have to find an alternative route.

A Northumbrian Water spokesperson has confirmed whilst workers are on-site in Redcar, the hospital is still accessible.

They said: “We were made aware of a burst pipe on West Dyke Road near to Redcar Hospital last night.

“We immediately attended to carry out a temporary repair to control the flow of water, and we plan to go back tonight to complete a permanent repair.

“We’re doing this overnight to reduce any impact on our customers’ water supplies, as work will involve cutting out a section of pipe and replacing it with a whole new section.

“Meanwhile, there is still an escape of some water while the temporary repair is in place, and we’re using pumps and sandbags to keep any localised flooding to a minimum.

“We’re working closely with Redcar and Cleveland Council and have closed West Dyke Road at the hospital to allow us to work safely, with a diversion route in place."

“Access to the hospital is still available by travelling northbound on West Dyke Road.”
