Two Darlington food businesses have combined to create a spin-off venture providing doughnut burgers.
The team behind Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts is launching a spin-off business with the culinary experts at Sides Darlington, a brunch, tapas and homemade sandwich business.
Sides Darlington, which opened in the town’s covered market in June and is spearheaded by experienced chefs Ory Vanes, his brother Keaton Linehan and Dan Rooney, is also planning to open more outlets in the area.

Their new collaborative brand, named BurgerNSides, will ‘smash’ conventions by serving a combination of sweet doughnuts filled with smashed burgers and other savoury ingredients, as well as serving burger-style meals with traditional brioche buns.
BurgerNSides will sell its unique sweet and savoury combos for delivery or collection from a venue in Northgate, Darlington.
Jack Beadle, co-founder of Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts, said: “Burger fans will not know what’s hit them.
"The burgers should really come with a tastebud alert warning – but weirdly, the savoury smashed burgers and sweet doughnut toppings work incredibly well together.”
The surprising stars of the new menu include the B&B– a double-smashed burger patty with cheese and bacon in a plain doughnut bun, topped with sweet Biscoff sauce and Biscoff crumb.
Standing out from the crowd, due to its pink-iced doughnut topping with colourful sprinkles, is the PBJ - a peanut butter and jelly burger - which, according to Jack, is “perfect for those who can’t decide on sweet or savoury”.
BurgerNSides will also be selling slightly more traditional grilled cheese and onion burgers, bacon and cheeseburgers and an American favourite side dish ‘tatertots’, which will be available as pizza tots, truffle tots, bacon and cheese, house-seasoned or the firm’s own take on poutine, traditionally a serving of chips topped with cheese and gravy.
The smashed burger originals and doughnut buns will be initially launched online only from 4pm on Wednesday, September 13.
Jack who set up his first Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts store in High Row, Darlington, with business partner Richard Bridge, said: “The new combos are set to smash the competition when they’re launched on Wednesday. Foodies in Darlington are set for a taste sensation”.
Jack and Richard’s new collaboration began over a casual coffee with the chefs at Sides Darlington and has quickly turned into a reality.
Prices will range from £13.00 - £13.50 for burgers and from £7 for tatertots.
Entrepreneurs Jack and Richard began their Harry’s empire in May 2019 when they launched urban axe-throwing business Hatchet Harry’s.
They have since opened eight axe-throwing venues in Newcastle, Nottingham, Derby, Brighton, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Liverpool and Middlesborough.
Some of the venues are combined with outlets for Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts.

The duo launched Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts, initially as an online-only business, during lockdown, when they were forced to temporarily mothball Hatchett Harry’s due to Covid restrictions.
The growing doughnut business launched on the high street at the beginning of last year.
