Iron railings on a cut stone plinth separate the main façade from the pavement to the right of the tower but these are missing to the corresponding area to the left.
The listing details make specific reference to the railings to the right of the central tower but a photograph dated 1932 clearly shows the railings on both sides.

It is believed that the railings to the left were removed during the second world war.
The proposed works will re-instate the original feature of the railings, gate and stone plinth to the left of the stair tower.
The new railings will comprise round vertical bars with spear shaped finials and a horizontal flat bar upper rail to match the original railings. The upright bars will be set into holes in a stone plinth.
The stone plinth will be curved and chamfered to match the original plinth.
- Full planning permission to convert existing barns into seven residential dwellings, Manfield Barns, Cottagers Lane, Manfield, Darlington, North Yorkshire.

The proposed site at Manfield Barns, Cottagers Lane/Grunton Lane lies on the southern access road out of the village of Manfield where it sits outside development limits.
Manfield Barns is a disused former farmhouse and associated agricultural buildings lying to the west of Grunton Lane/Cottagers Lane at the southern end of the village of Manfield.
The unsightly 20th century farm outbuildings which are detrimental to the fabric of the original building will be removed and the original building repaired with high quality materials, which are visually like the original building and surrounding farm buildings, with stone, brick and pantile roofs.
