A man in his 30s has died following a crash in Bishop Auckland - and police are appealing for more information. 

The young man was declared dead at the scene of a crash on the A688 this morning. Another man was taken to hospital following the collision. 

The crash, between the Park Head and Bracks Farm roundabout, saw the A688 closed for hours, and police are now appealing for any eyewitnesses, or anyone with dash cam footage, to come forward 

North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) have confirmed one person has been taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital after they received a report of a crash on the A688 in Bishop Auckland shortly before 8am today (September 5).

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal collision in Bishop Auckland this morning.

"The incident happened just before 8am on the A688 between the Park Head and Bracks Farm roundabouts.

"It involved a Nissan Juke and a Saab car which were travelling in opposite directions when they have collided.

"Sadly, the driver of the Nissan – a man in his 30s – was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The driver of the Saab – a man in his 20s – was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"The road was closed for several hours as officers launched their investigation.

"It has now reopened but officers are asking for any witnesses, especially those who might have dashcam footage, to come forward."

This morning, a spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic collision this morning (September 5) shortly before 8am on the A688 in Bishop Auckland.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"We took one patient to Darlington Memorial hospital by road."
