Hundreds of residents have shared their memories of a well-known North East spiral ramp as demolition continues on a shopping centre.
New pictures show that demolition has now started on Castlegate Shopping Centre’s spiral ramp in Stockton.
Well-known as the ‘Curly Wurly’ the ramp has been a staple of Stockton’s town centre for many years.
Demolition work is now taking place on the ramp and will make way for the Stockton Waterfront urban park.
A spokesperson for Stockton Borough Council said: “The location, close to Finkle Street, will combine the urban park with the existing streetscape, reflecting the character of the area and include seating, heritage interpretation and further opportunities for hosting events or markets.”
Hundreds of residents have shared their fond memories of the ramp after the images were released.
One person said: “End of an era & fond memories of skilfully going up & down without scratching my car.”

One resident said: “Sad times. My way up to work for 4 years, on a moped and when I just passed my test. Scary. Had to get your steering right”
Others expressed sadness to see it go, but hope for the new urban park.
A resident said: “Aw it's quite sad to see it go, I hope the new area will be nice and make us proud.”
