Flames could be seen billowing from the front of a house which has now been boarded up after firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Emergency services were called to Thorney Close Road in Thorney Close, Sunderland, after 8pm last night (Tuesday, August 22) to reports of a property on fire.

Pictures from the scene show firefighters tackling the flames that were coming out of the doorway as plumes of smoke filled the air.

Crews from two engines attended the scene, and left within half an hour after extinguishing the flames.

The cause of the fire is presently unknown.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has issued a statement regarding the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that on Tuesday evening (August 22) two crews from Farringdon Community Fire Station attended a reported residential fire in the Thorney Close Road area of Sunderland.

“Our fire control team received the call at 8pm and both appliances were on scene within four-minutes of the emergency call. The firefighters extinguished the blaze which severely damaged the front door and canopy.

“There were no reported injuries and the crews left the scene at 8.28pm.”

The damage from the fire has meant the door has been removed and workers were seen boarding up the windows of the property today (August 23).

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 8pm last night (Tuesday), we were made aware of fire at an address on Thorney Road Close in Sunderland by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

“Emergency services attended the scene and the fire was extinguished.

“Thankfully, no-one is believed to have been injured in the incident.

“Officers are treating the fire as suspected arson and enquiries are ongoing.
